Northern Oklahoma College is a liberal arts school and was established on March 8, 1901. It is a community college and was established as University preparatory school in Tonka, Oklahoma. It has two additional campuses in Stillwater and Enid, Oklahoma. Thousand of students enroll in the college and the current student strength is 2,700. The institute was first established to help students prepare to enter into the University of Oklahoma. The institute was closed down during the World War 1 and was reopened after the war on September 2, 1919. It was James B.A Robertson who signed to reopen the college. College courses were not added until 1921.
The school was renamed several times but acquired its current name in 1965. Northern Oklohoma College has three campuses. All three campuses have good faculty members and social programs. The campus at Tonka hosts an art gallery by Oklahoma artists, throughout the year. It contains a museum of science and history as well as a radio station. The campus at Enid was established in 1999, and stands on the former campus of Phillips University. The campus has an observatory for astronomy. The college added a new campus at Stillwater and applicants who don’t meet the requirements for admission in state university can attend a Gateway program there.
Dr. Edwin E. Vineyard is the longest serving president of the Northern Oklahoma College. He administered the college for 25 years and has left a lasting legacy with the college. It was under his visionary leadership that the college saw a major transformation and saw many building programs. He turned the college from a small institute to a prestigious learning center. Today, the college is among the best in Oklahoma and is home to more than 2700 students. Dr. Joe. M. Kinzer was the 11th president of the institute and his reign saw some major accomplishments. It was under his leadership and vision that the college saw the opening of the worlds’ largest and well equipped Media iFinish lab. The university purchased Phillips University in 1999, and established major partnerships to develop and form curricula that benefits potential and present employees.
